THE ALUMNI BYZANTIAN SOCIETY

Ivanov, 18th November 2008

Thirty OGs attended the Christmas Term’s fringe theatre outing hosted by Auden Witter, retired Head of English. This was the biggest ever turnout at a Byzantian outing. Tickets were snapped up to see Kenneth Branagh staring in Chekhov’s Ivanov.

OGA - OLD GEORGIANS' ASSOCIATION

OGA CC - OLD GEORGIANS' ASSOCIATION CRICKET CLUB

Latest News

Established for over 50 years, Cricket Week matches again proved enjoyable and successful last summer. OGs have won 3, lost 3 and drawn 2. Over 50 people have played in the games which cater for players of all abilities and are a good way to meet friends for an enjoyable day at the College, on the beautiful grounds. We have 3 matches against College teams on Old Georgians' day each June. Maiden centuries were scored by Jonny Stephens, Tim Cross, on President's Day, which is always an enjoyable gathering, and by David Mepham, who manages our A XI matches so successfully. Teams for matches are raised by managers, to whom your application will be most welcome, or by direct application to me. The dates for 2009 are inline with this year. Old Georgian Cricketers look forward to meeting their friends next season.

OGGS - OLD GEORGIANS' GOLF SOCIETY

Latest News
As another year for the Golf Society comes to an end I look back on three most enjoyable meetings which gave us three different winners. Hayling Island saw 21 golfers enjoy brilliant weather, with the John Wilson Bowl being won by Adrian Macarty, with Bobby Burns and Pip Clothier in second and third places. This year our meeting at New Zealand GC was held in early July and a field of 16 saw Robert Lee win the Richard Brooker Bowl with 42 points, from Adrian Macarty and Jim McCarthy.
Our final meeting at Hindhead GC saw a disappointingly small field of 13 compete for the St George’s College Weybridge Cup. This was won by our Captain Francis Hughes with 34 points, from Tim Lawrence and Hugh Burns. Our match against Chislehurst GC resulted in a narrow defeat but the hospitality of Chislehurst members was up to its usual high standard. Any one who hasn’t played in this fixture has missed a real treat. Our Grafton Morrish team took part in the finals on the last weekend of September. We currently have 85 members but the Society is always looking for new members and provided you have a handicap you will be made very welcome. Please put the dates for our fixtures next year in your diary:- Hayling Island GC Tuesday 12 May 2009 New Zealand GC Friday 10 July 2009 Match v Chislehurst GC end July 2009 date TBA Hindhead GC Wednesday 9 September 2009 Bobby Burns (Class of 1956),

OLD GEORGIAN'S HOCKEY CLUB

Latest News

Old Georgians Hockey Club News & the Clubhouse gets a makeover!

OGHC has had a very exciting start to the 08/09 season. The newly refurbished Club House opened in September after two months of hard work from members of the OGA and OGHC. This excellent facility is now available for hire for functions (see www.oghc.org for more details).
The Men’s 1 Team has had a brilliant start to the season. Unbeaten this season, they are now top of the Western Conference and are on target for promotion to the Premier League. They have also beaten Peterborough and Chichester in the England Hockey Cup and face Bowdon HC in the quarter finals. The Club is very keen to support the local community and has recently been awarded funding by Sport England to run hockey coaching sessions for local secondary schools. In October the Club was awarded Bronze ClubMark accreditation by Surrey CC in recognition of the high standards of the Club. OGHC now has five men’s teams (including a veterans side), three ladies sides, and a mixed team. Training sessions are held throughout the season on Tuesdays evenings from 7 - 8:30 pm, under the guidance of Nicky Thompson, a former GB player. The Dragons Junior section is also growing fast with over 60 members aged from 7 to 18 years. Their sessions run from 9:30 to 11.00 every Sunday morning. New members of all ages and abilities are always welcome; please visit our website www.oghc.org for further details. Ben Hunt, Chairman (Class of 1993)

WOGLE - THE WEYBRIDGE OLD GEORGIANS' LOURDES EXPERIENCE

The WOGLE Ball

WOGLE (Weybridge Old Georgians Lourdes Experience) held its annual fundraising Ball on Saturday 15th November 2008 at the Cobham Hilton and this year the event was Carnival themed. The event was enjoyed by over 200 people including many Old Georgians who have travelled to Lourdes with WOGLE as well as many other friends and supporters of the group.

The Carnival theme was reflected in the brightly coloured welcome drinks, and the steel band that played during the reception. The Brooklands Suite was beautifully decorated and the food had a Caribbean twist to it. During an enjoyable evening games were played and a raffle and auction held to raise money for WOGLE. Guests enjoyed live music from ‘Life and Soul’ late into the night. Over £3,000 was raised for WOGLE. These funds are much needed as next years WOGLE trip is larger than usual as a special trip is being organised to mark Fr Paul Connor’s 50th anniversary of being a Josephite. Thanks to everyone who supported this event and made the evening such a success.

To find out more about next year’s trip to Lourdes, which is being held in August, please contact Ben Hunt on 07766 762130.
